Category: accessible Devices
Hello, all. Forgive me if this thread has been covered somewhere else. If it has and you know about it, just give me the link and I'll go read it. My question is this. i'm thinking of purchasing an accessible phone. i've heard good and bad about both Talks and MobileSpeak, and am curious which one you use, and why. What do you like about it, or not like about it? Thanks.
More than anything, It'll depend on what type of phone you are considering for purchase.
While I've used both products, I gave up on Talks a few years ago and Have used all of the offerings from Code factory. One of the biggest reasons is service and support. Also, from the time I originally purchased the product they've not asked me for any more of my money! I also appreciate there prompt response when I do have problems that are to be addressed. As far as stability I think they have rock solid products!
I have used Talks for a good number of years, I have had it all on Nokia phones. I like the way it sounds because of the speech engine, the way it responds, and the easy of to use. But that is just my opinion.
Personally, It would seem like the CodeFactory product line offers much more support even in terms of third-party dealers/distributers here in the US. I think that product line is going to eventually be the way to go for most people in the very near future, not to mention the support for windows phones.
In terms of performance, I've use talks on a regular basis and have used mobile speak to a small extent and am overall happier with the responsiveness of talks on the symbian phones.
I liked Talks on my Symbian phone, and wasn't crazy about Mobile Speak. However, I love Mobile Speak on my Windows phones, so if you're going Windows, there's no other option. Lol!
If I do get MobileSpeak, I'd get the SMT5800 phone that Verizon sells. I'm currently a Verizon customer, but my contract is close to being up. If I got Talks, I'd switch to At&T, most likely, and get a Nokia phone. I do like the Talks speech better, I'll say that, but beyond speech, I don't know much about the features of each product, and what makes them different.
Smt 59-- is a great device. We've set several clients up with it and they are happy. THere really are endless possiblities with the MS product line. I've tried talks and MS on the nokia n75 and neither of them really impressed me, though in fairness, I'm not a big fan of the simbian offerings unless you move up to the n95 or some of the PDA style devices. If there are any specific questions you may have feel free to throw them out here. I've been using the CF and Talks products since 03, so hopefully I can help somewhat.
I think that you have more options with mobilespeak for smartphones there seems to be more of them than the regular phones. I feel like also the sales people no more about smartphones as well
Mobile Speak Pocket's where it's at on the Samsung SCH-I760 if you're doing the Verizon thing...Consider that one because it's the same price as the 5800 and a bunch more stable. I've had both. You'll probably wait on the Samsung though, as the only version of MSP that supports it is a beta, but the final should come out sooner than later. It's an incredible phone though!
If you choose to use a PDA which I have chosen to do so, the learning curve can be a bit more than the MSS, but agree with the previous post stability, and power is deffinitly the advantage of using a PDA over the smart phone. I like the VZW 6800 and I still have an old trusty palm trio around for a backup!
My next cell phone will hopefully be a motorolaQ 9C. it has a qwerty keyboard, but hey, I think I can adjust to using one of those. It works with mobile Speak.
oh, and as an add-on to my last post, I've chosen this particular phone because I can use it with Sprint, and go on the same plan as my mom and brother.
I'm using Mobile Speak Pocket on my HTC Hermes quad band PDA and it's great. I haven't regreted choosing MSP over Talks one bit.
Hi. It's interesting that some of you have brought up the stability issue. I have two friends who have the Motorola Q, one with Verizon, one with Sprint. My friend who uses MobileSpeak on the Q9C with Sprint has endless troubles with it locking up on him. It does that about four times a day now. It's unreal. My friend who has the Q9M, which is Verizon's version, has it lock up on him maybe a couple times a week. I've heard the SMT5800 is more stable with MobileSpeak, but of course don't know that for sure.
Thanks all for the recommendations thus far. I really appreciate them.
Hi,
I'm also looking for an accessible cell phone. I'm wanting to get a Motorola Q9M with Mobile speak for my Birth Day, but I don't think I'll be able to get it just because of the price... Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris Harrington
i'm thinking of switching over to Mobilespeak from Talks. Looks like its so, so much more accessible than Talks, so how do I go about getting my license and stuff once I've downloaded Mobilespeak to my phone?
Jen.
I think that LG phones are good even with out a skreen reader. That is just what I think.
Yes, the phone I currently have now is an LG. As regular phones go, it does all right. I can do the really important stuff, like check my signal strength, battery, missed calls, etc. I can even text, to a degree. But phones now come with so many more features, and I'd like to be able to use them. That's only possible with an accessible phone.
I've had the owasys mobil phone before and think the speech is rubbish compared to talks. On a normal phone, I've only used talks. It's the cheapest and you can get it from several places. The only trouble I find with talks is that it's really hard to change the language, unless it's the phone I've got.
I'm currently using Mobile Speak with the Motorola Q9H. I've also used Talks, with the Nokia 6682. I do like Talks better in general. But with Talks, you're limited to using a Symbian phone. We have more options with Code Factory, and their customer support is better.
I've had the Q for almost four months now, and the phone has only locked up, at the most, four times since I got it. If your friend's phone and/or speech is crashing frequently, maybe they're trying to run too many applications at one time.
I don't like the q because when your in a call it doesn't work. So if you have a beep it doesn't tell you who is calling but i guess that is a moto issue.
I have been exploring the 5800 from verizon as well. What makes it unstable? I am trying to convince to have verizon match at&t's price for the speaks, and maybe will be successful.
I had mobilespeak on the pantech duo. That phone only lasted about 6 months. Big mistake. I loved mobilespeak though. Does anyone know how the blackjack 2 is? I'm looking into other phones too. I have att. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have friends that love the blackjack 2 I wish verizon offered it, it sounds so darn clear.
